thematic project ♥

“Creativity in the Context of

Multimedia University”

In order to complete our group project, we have to complete the following stages:-

Stage 1 : Mindmapping -Logical, Associated

Stage 2 : Essay /Report

Stage 3 : Design Concept

Stage 4 : Juxtaposition

Stage 5 : Story board

Stage 6 : Short video

Each of us had assigned with different tasks to complete those stages.

Of course, the idea of this particular thematic project is the final outcome from 5 of us.

One of the way to generate our main concept was by drawing mindmap based on the HUGE topic above.

logical mindmap

Our group figured out a topic from the Logical Mindmap!

After we have completed mindmapping, we proceed to our Design Concept in a further way. Using Juxtaposition method, we decided to create an image. After we tried out many types of images, we decided to use Alys's image. (mine was rejected!)

Sooner, our report with 1228 words and video has done.

phew...!!!

What a hard work, especially the video.
I have to give my respect to our main producer, Hilary Wong.
He is a GREAT movie editor.

random words / image association

random words

Random words/ image association is an idea generation method which allows us to systematically generate new ideas through a fixed formula. The whole premise is to provoke a reaction from the brain.

According to CreatingMinds.org, there are number of ways to random association!

discover new things around you

random page

1. Discover it

Find a random word can be used as a stimulus for new ideas. The examples are:

  • Take a look around you. What can you see? Can you picture any words in the surrounding? What about things? What else is happening?
  • Choose a random page in a book! You can do this without open your eyes! Run your finger around the page and stop at a page. Then, point your finger on the page and look for a suitable word near your finger.
  • Ask the surrounding people to give you a random word.
  • Select a word from a prepared list of evocative words (fire, child, brick, sausage, etc.)

Good random words are evocative and nothing to do with the existed problem. Ambiguity also helps. Normally, nouns are the best, but verbs and adjectives can also be used effectively.

think vague

2. Find associations

Think about other things about which the word reminds you. Follow associations to see where they go. Think optimistic: associations can be noat clearly understood and having thin consistency (this is all about CREATIVITY, not a test!).

3. Use the associations to create new ideas

Now create new ideas by linking any of the associations with your problem. It can be as vague as you like, besides, what you want is ideas!

If other people give ideas that trigger further ideas from you, then you can go off down that route to see where it goes.

As a variant, you can do stages 2 and 3 together, finding an association and an immediate idea from this.

Just the position! (Part 2)

The Addict

Do you know the effect
Man has on Woman?
It's like coffee lovers who could not live without coffee
Sometimes Man is sweet, sometimes Man is acerb,
Like the taste of coffee will be
Man is like a drug and Woman is the addict of it
It's harmful and Woman still desire for it

Tik Tok

Happiness can be found
just like when you live upon the time
Happiness is a dream
just after you realized it, it was too late to recall
Happiness is like a shadow
just whenever you go, it will follow you

Light of My Life

You are the light of my life,
shown me the way when I was blinded by darkness
I see you glow, see you flickered, see you dance,
guided me the way when I was overwhelmed by sadness
I light a candle, melting it clear,
blue, white, yellow and red
You are still burn bright,
still holding me on

What is Love?

Love is like chili seeds,
nothing is gonna change its form,
unbreakable and unexpected,
as the seed fall to the ground,
it keeps growing and growing,
from one to infinity,
just like the endlessness of love.

Just the position!

Juxtaposition (Just the position)!!
Well, the explanation for this has something to do with position.
"Juxta" means beside, near.
According to dictionary.reference.com, juxtaposition means an act or instance of placing close together or side by side.
For a good example, it is like for comparison or contrast.
Some of us think this is an act of conflict between left brain and right brain.

Analogy is divided by 2 different types.

First, metaphor (not using as / like). Metaphor is a of speech concisely expressed by comparing two things, saying that one is the other.

Second, simile (using as / like). Simile is a figure of speech comparing two unlike things, often introduced with the word "like" or "as".

Well, there are two categories of analogies, too!
1. Logical Analogies
Use similarities in design, structure, or function to connect back to the subject.

2. Affective Analogies
Emotional resemblance. For example, using an animal to describe a person's characteristic.

Angry like a tiger

Can you tell me what are the analogies by looking at the pictures?

I want to share these two advertisements. There are some similarities and maybe there is no similarities. Check this out.

During the class, my friends and I were playing this interesting game.
From making sentence from the selected words till combination of the words into one word.
I had (i)Fly, Wood ; (ii) Flower, Rock ; (iii) Duck, Tree

Give me some comments about my drawing, could you?

Mind Mapping, Part 2

Besides Logical Mind Mapping, there is still Associates Mind Mapping!
What's associates mind mapping about anyway?
This mind mapping really come to its own for boosting creativity and enabling us to generate new ideas!
The themes in the mind mapping might seem not applicable to the main subject. Well, this is the magic of associates mind mapping. It enables you to think creatively.
In the class, we were referring to a mind mapping which involved mortal and pestle.
Yes, it's MORTAL and PESTLE.
Randomly, we have to make sentences by using the words in this mind map which seems not related to mortal and pestle. I chosen Death, Sun and USA.

Mortal and pestle

Death

In order to call The Death Reaper, black magicians need to fill the prey's blood into the mortal. By using pestle to surround the mortal for couple of times, it helps to enhance the interaction between magicians and The Death Reaper. Death will soon fall on the prey who chosen.

Sun

Combine mortal and pestle into UMBRELLA!

USA

The United States soldiers wear mortal as their head protection and pestle as weapon. Well, they can use pestle to hit enemies, right?

I am a peace lover, by the way.

Mind Mapping, Part 1

Have you ever felt the uncertainty when preparing an essay or a presentation?
Especially in a limited period.
You can't expect yourself to jot down every detail, words by words, on the blank page!
Running out of idea

Apparently, mind mapping is the powerful graphic technique which provides a universal key to unlocking the potential of the brain.
It's easier for us to memorize information through pictures and less words.
In another meaning, it enhances human performance.

Mind mapping categorized into two types,
(a) Logical Mind Mapping
(b)Associated Mind Mapping

Proponent of mind mapping is Tony Bruzan. He has teaching all stages of people - children and adults - in this world about how to maximize the use of their brain power. Oh yep, nevertheless, he is a famous psychology author too. He is probably best known for his book, Use Your Head.

Use Your Head

by Tony Bruzan

There are few characteristics of mind mapping:-
1. Main subject is crystallized in the centre
2. The main themes of the subject radiate from the central image on branches
3. Branches hold a key image / word printed on the associated line- details radiate out
4. The branches from a connected nodal structure

Novelty

Have you ever been attracted with a new item?
While looking at the item, you could not tell what is this particular item.
Well, this is the state of Novelty.

Novelty is the quality of being new, different or strange.

Some people have the novelty all the time especially designers.
Businessman like Bill Gates has the state of being new with his Microsoft.

The amazing Microsoft Surface is different than other electronic devices, we can kiss boring keyboard goodbye and welcome our new baby, touch screen.

the new Microsoft Surface

Creativity

What leads novelty?
No doubt, it's creativity.

"Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being... Creativity requires passion and commitment. Out of the creative act is born symbols and myths. It brings to our awareness what was previously hidden and points to new life. The experience is one of heightened consciousness–ecstasy.”
Rollo May, The Courage to Create

Creativity is a mental and social process in generating new ideas and concepts. According to Wikipedia, creativity is also called as "assumption-breaking process". Creative ideas are often generate when one discards preconceived assumptions and attempts a new approach or method that might seem to others unthinkable.

For example, Leonardo di Ser Piero Da Vinci recognized as a boundary breaker. He is an Italian polymath, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, painter, sculptor, architect, botanist, musician and writer. I think if i really have to talk about his occupations, it would be page jamming. His ideas were originally made without any book references.

Innovation

Innovation is the process of generating and applying creative concept in some specific context respectively. What's different between creativity and innovation is creativity refers to producing new ideas, approaches or actions while innovation is the implementation of ideas.

Most obvious innovative product is mobile phone. Product changes according to time and trend.

In my point of view, iPhone from Apple is an innovation. Hmmm.. Innovative products are costly and highly demanded! Look, that's value of innovation!

iPhone

Invention

One of the world most prolific inventor in history, Thomas A. Edison, always seeing a new possibility, a new connection or relationship can spark invention.

"Hell, there is no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something new."
Thomas A. Edison

An invention is a new configuration, device, or process. Invention can extend the boundaries of human knowledge or experience.

The work of "light bulb man" has categorized in the field of capital "C" which mean his invention has greatly influenced life around the world.

I believe his open curious mind enables him to see beyond what is known. He has developed many devices including the phonograph, the motion capture camera , and of cause the long lasting, practical electric light bulb.

Imagine, what kind of world would it be without great inventions like this?
